In august when when the summer is at
its height the annual opera performances of the Shodon(yogurts
Banquets) take place in the Norbu Linka Palace(the
summer palace of Dalai lama) in Lhasa.As day breaks
over the mountain top while filmy mists still linger
upon the popular trees, people are ready and waiting
outside the brass studded gate of the Norbu Linkha.
As the great gate swing open the crowd surges in,
women in their sleeveless tunics man in their long
boots and skipping children .Once the Summer Palace
of the Dalai Lama the jewel park high surrounding
wall used to Keep the common folk out and the meadows,
ponds, rockeries and pavilion with in the park were
only thrown open to all during the Shodon when everyone
gathered in the park to enjoy performances of Tibetan
opera. Time has passed and now the Norbu Linkha has
become the jewels of fifth people open for the enjoyment
of every one. Traditionally monks are required to
remain sequestered in their Monasteries for the ascetic
practice of Buddhism. People from their families prepare
sour milk for them to drink while dancing following
in their period of confinement. During this period
a large and portrait of Buddha Thankka display in
the ceremony.
Outline Itinerary
Day 01 /Aug 06 : Fly to Gonggar
Airport from Kathmandu/ Chengdu China / Bangkok via
Chengdu/ Beijing/Shanghai/ Guanghou, Meet at Airport
and transfer to Lhasa. O/n Hotel.
Day 02 /Aug 07 : Sight seeing
tour of Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple, Tibetan Medical
Center and Barkhor Bazaar. O/n Hotel.
Day 03 /Aug 08 : Visit the Drepung
Monastery, Sera Monastery, Huge Thanka will be displayed
with the Tibetan Monks praying and Chanting, on the
occasion of Shodon Festival.
Day 04 /Aug 09 : The grand opera
at the Norbhulingkha Palace begins, observe the opera
and the Tibet Museum at the Norbhulinkha.
Day 05/Aug 10 : Drive to Shigatse
through Northern Highway, After check in Hotel sight
free O/n Hotel.
Day 06 : Visit Tashilhunpo Monastery
and Tibetan Free Market, drive to Gyantse en route
visiting Shalu Monastery , two hrs drive, in Gyantse
we visit Khumbum Stupa, Phalkhor Monastery, O/n Hotel.
Day 07 : Drive to Lhasa/ Tsedang
crossing two high passes above 5000 Meters via Lake
Yamdruktso, If you decide to Tsedang we will quickly
visit Samey Monastery enroute.
Day 08 : Transfer to Airport
to fly yours own destination.
