Makalu to Everest
Traverse over Sherpani Col, West col and Amphu Laptcha.
This is the ultimate high altitude non-technical traverse
with camps above 6,000 m, which crosses icy passes
at almost 6,300m. It involves use of crampons, ice
axe and the ability to rappel down 70-degree ice slopes.
It is a very strenuous serious adventure suitable
for only the most experienced of trekkers and adventurers.
This expedition in the remote high Himalaya
will be an extremely challenging one. Previous mountaineering
experience is required as you will be traveling over
rugged terrain with sharp altitude gains, numerous
glaciers and high passes. Our group will be totally
self-sufficient for an extended portion of the trek.
The reward will be seeing the seldom-seen back sides
of Everest and Lhotse, the five holy lakes at Panch
Pokhari and the impressive 8000m granite south face
of Makalu, "the great black one" and the
fifth highest mountain in the world.
Trekking from the middle hill regions
of the Arun valley we climb northwards through Rai
villages and terraces of corn to the Sherpa village
of Mure, Seduwa and Tashigoun. We cross the Shipton
Pass (4,000m) into the upper Arun and ascend to Makalu
Base Camp, before traversing the Sherpani Col (6241m')
and the West Col (6,232m') into the upper Hinku valley.
From a camp at 5,600m alongside the spectacularly
beautiful Shiva lakes of Panch Pokhari we cross the
serrated ridge of the Amphu Lapsa (5,780m) down into
the habited villages of Khumbu. Crossing the Kongma
La (18,000) we have an option for those people with
any legs left to summit the rocky spire of Pokalde
Peak (19,090') and then to scramble up Kala Pattar
overlooking Everest Base Camp. The return is down
to Lukla via a number of Sherpa villages and Buddhist
monasteries and a short helicopter flight back to
Kathmandu.
